I have always wanted a wood iPhone case. Wood creates this interesting balance when combined with technology. For years the tech industry has innovated on all sorts of different materials for our electronics. We have seen the rise of plastics used in all of our every day products. Even our furniture can be made with plastics, go look at ikea. But recently wood has reemerged in products. One of my favorite ways it has returned is as an accessory to iPhones.
Craftsmen Cases reached out to me on Instagram and I jumped at the opportunity to review one of their cases, because their cases are truly beautiful and I had to see for myself what these crafted cases were like. They sent me their walnut case for the iPhone 6s Plus.
I received the case and was immediately impressed with the product. Their packaging is really cool. I love the wax seal on the paper wrapping. The branding and logo is definitely on point.
The case is made of two parts that slide together on your iPhone. It is quite a clever way to install your case. I have had different plastic and rubber type cases, and all of them have fit to varying degrees, some have been slightly loose on the phone and others have been so tight that it was a nightmare to put the case on the phone. But this case fit like a dream. It fit snug enough to guarantee that it wouldn’t fall off, but easy enough to slide on that I can’t help but wonder why all cases don’t fit this nice.
The inside of the case is lined with a felt like material that is very soft and definitely protects the back of the iPhone and probably helps in the snug fit of the phone.
I think it mostly goes without saying that these cases are not designed to be strong protective cases like an Otter Box or Lifeproof case. The case will likely not survive a big drop like the protective cases will. With that said I have still been very impressed with how strong and durable this case is. Walnut is a hard wood that can withstand a lot before getting any dings.
Craftsmen Cases also sell cases in Bamboo and Rosewood. Both are exceptionally beautiful and strong hardwoods.
One thing that is hard to tell from the pictures is how slim the case is. I imagine that the difficult thing about designing a case from wood is finding the balance between strength and slimness. We all love our cases to be as thin as possible, but we still need the case to be strong enough to last. This case has found that line, I can’t imagine that it could be much thinner than it is while maintaining so much strength. It is even thinner than my previous plastic and rubber type case.
Overall I really like this case. I love having a natural wood case that is very well designed.
Be sure to check out our Instagram page for a giveaway of one of their cases on Mar 26-27.
