Polar Pen Review

It is a pen made of magnets. That is how I describe it when I show it to friends, because that is exactly what the Polar Pen is.When you first hear about it, it sounds a little silly. Why would you make a pen out of magnets? But once you use it, you understand. It is addicting to play with and far too entertaining.

I already play with my normal pen when I am sitting in meetings or sitting at my desk brainstorming ideas. It is just a habit of mine to disassemble the pen in my hand when I am idle. The Polar Pen makes this far too fun. Not only does it disassemble, but the magnets are fun to play with also. Polar Pen even has a website page dedicated to some of the fun things you can turn your pen into and play with.

The Poloar Pen comes in three different colors of magnets, silver, gunmetal black, and gold. You can also get three different ink colors: blue, black, and red. The ink colors and magnets can be swapped out at anytime. You can even order extra magnets of different colors to create unique color arrangements. At the opposite end of the pen in a stylus.

The Polar Pen was designed and developed by Andrew Gardner, a Canadian entrepreneur and head of the design firm INDIEDESIGN. As a student Andrew was constantly taking his pens apart in class. He has always loved magnets and when he was a kid he even tried building a perpetual motion machine using magnets. Since then magnets have been used in many of his designs. The Polar Pen was launched as a Kickstarter project in 2013. It did exceptionally well and had more than 14,000 people pledge to the campaign.

The packaging for the Polar Pen is really impressive. I appreciate when products have good packaging design. I think the reason packaging design has intrigued me so much recently is because it is kind of the last step in the design process and is definitely skipped over by so many designers. Many designers and businesses focus so much on the product that when it comes time to ship they just throw the product in a box and ship it. I love when the designer has taken the time to design packaging that enhances the product and makes the delivery even better. Instead of showing you one or two pictures of the packaging I received, here is a nice little video that Polar Pen put together of their packaging.

Overall the Polar Pen was really fun to review. When I received the pen I couldn’t wait to open it up to see their unique design. I have been using the pen at work and most of my coworkers keep walking up to my desk to check out the pen and play with it. It is a very different pen that I will definitely keep using.
